Crysis Primarily a PC Title, “Next-Gen” Consoles not Powerful Enough

TeamXBox is reporting that after speaking with the Cyrsis developers (Crytek) it looks like Crysis will be a PC/Windows-Vista title as DirectX 10 will be shipping with Windows Vista and not available on the current XBox 360 or upcomming Playstation 3. If you haven’t gotten a chance and possibly doubt this, take a few minutes and watch the famous 14min Crysis video here:

Crytek did that Crysis would run on DirectX 9 but is intended to be a DX 10 game for all the full features that developers are exposing in the API and on graphics cards. Since no DX10 parts are available and the team was obviously demoing it on a machine at the conference in the video above, I have a feeling the game is still going to look unbelievable on DX 9 cards with sufficient ram and a fast enough machine.

In other news, while Crytek was put on the map with their first game, FarCry, and small development teams, I’ve heard recently that the development team working on Crysis has reached near 50 full time developers which is just an incredibly large/expensive number. I think the team expects the “Cry” name to become as infamous as Unreal or Doom moving foward which should help justify the huge startup costs for this franchise. I can envision the new engine used in Crysis carrying the company for 3 years alone with no major engine upgrades, maybe just tooling enhancements for licensers or modders if they support that community. [...] To prepare you for this or to let you know if you should even bother watching it, consider that they are some of the most detailed/amazing outdoor scenery I’ve seen next to Crysis with volumetric lighting that makes Splinter Cell look anemic… I’m honestly amazed at the engine that Remedy has pulled out of their sleeve to make this game. I really hope the story line is worthy of it. [...]
