Console Sales Numbers

IGN posted the sales numbers so far this year for the XBox 360, Wii and PS3… the result? Jesus Sony, get on the ball here.

It’s funny to look at these numbers and think “price has nothing to do with it”, unfortunately Sony launched with too high of a price point and no games that were must-haves that weren’t just on the XBox as well. Leaving a huge taste of “who cares?” in everyone’s mouth.

Now with rumors floating around that the new trimmed down 40GB PS3s are having some quality-control issues, I’d have to say that I’m pretty damn happy I got one of the original 60GB models which included the PS2 hardware in it.

I actually happen to love my PS3, but I think the marketing by Sony and strategy so far to get into homes has been absolute shit. Every gamer I know has a 360, and 3/4 of them also have a Wii while 3 of them have PS3s and only 1 of them has just as PS3.

The landscape may change next year, but with Konami pushing Metal Gear Solid 4 back to Q1/2 of next year given that they were demoing it pretty heavily a few months ago, you have to wonder… looking at these numbers and with Kojima’s comments in the past about the XBox 360 being a possibility for MGS… is the writing on the wall that MGS is currently being ported to XBox?

To recoup multi-year development costs on a system with shit distribution could take years and may not happen for the Konami team… but distributing one of the year’s most highly anticipated games on both platforms, more than doubling your potential customers out of the gate is just good business.

Here’s my official stance: Konami is working on bringing MGS4 to the XBox 360, without those distribution numbers MGS4 will be a financial let-down.

You do realize that the link you used for “40GB PS3s are having some quality-control issues” is about how LOW the failure rates are, right? Not how high…

  2. Miko Says:

Yes apart from konami have stated they need the space of bluray so how do you work that one out on the 360 , multiple downloads episodeic content , maybe ms can get the dollors out again before they loose there value.

Roberto, I know it seemed like an odd choice, but if you go to the start of the sentence “now with rumors floating around”…

Keeping in mind that Microsoft categorically denied all quality issues with the 360, until the internet EXPLODED with “Me too!” and then a class action threat finally prompted them to acknowledge the problem.

So I wouldn’t take Sony’s word at face value.

Remember the “Green Blob” problem Sony had with their SXRD-based TV sets that wasn’t a problem either until a class action lawsuit was put together, then magically the warranty on ALL those TVs was extended a year?

But in fairness to what you said, it’s true, the wording of the sentence plus the link seem a bit confusing… maybe I should go dig up a better link. Thanks for the heads up.

    Miko,
That’s a good question, but there are games working around similar limitations. GTA 4 mentioned a space issue with the XBox 360 and if you notice Halo 3 has some surprisingly low res textures in places, again due to the space limitations on the disk needing to cram all that content on there.

I think Microsoft has plenty of tricks up it’s sleeve when incentifying companies to fit their games on the DVD media.

If anything I think the first order of business is to over-compress the textures and audio, the 2nd order of business which is likely not taken lightly would be to go to multiple disks for the game.

IIRC they started doing that towards the end of the XBox and PS2 lifespan for the bigger games didn’t they?

I think putting a classic game like Metal Gear that’s always been on a Sony console on the weaker system would be a major smack in the face, a serious let down.

Other then financial reasons there would be no reason to do it. I hope the developer stands on there principles and doesn’t make the mistake of porting it for Xbox.

But I tell you what, I’m always happy to read these completely Xbox biased Sony bashing articles; you really sound like you love your PS3 Riyad.

Mike, I love the PS3. Besides being a stable piece of hardware it’s also super functional.

My Xbox likes to Red-Ring though, so it’s pretty awesome too =/

I will say the lack of true Multiplayer on the PS3 blows and is one reason that I keep buying Xbox games with friends (to have fun).

Home can’t come soon enough. 2008 and 2009 will *absolutely* be the year of the PS3… I think the tide will turn when Gran Turismo, Killzone 2 and Metal Gear 4 hit… people will suddenly see things they haven’t been seeing on the XBox, making things like the constant slow downs in games like Mass Effect seem completely unacceptable when sidled up against the PS3 hardware and their 1st party titles.

    Just my 2 cents though.
