Companies whine over security changes to Vista

Can Microsoft win? Is it even possible? Have a look at this story over at the Register. What I take away from this story is:

  • Microsoft has to secure it’s operating system or everyone will hate it
  • If Microsoft secures it’s operating system, 3rd party security vendors will hate it
  • Don’t secure it too much, so we can hook our tools into the OS
  • You secured it too much! Now the only people that can use it are hard core rootkit hackers.
  • LAWSUIT!

Microsoft cannot win. I think even if they open sourced their entire operating system, people would complain, the same shit heads that are complaining now, that all the security is now exposed to the world for rootkits. And if they leave it closed source it’s not secure enough to stand on it’s own two feet. And if they keep it closed source, but work really hard on the security, well then they are monopolistic assholes!

Jesus, I think Microsoft should turn everyone’s machines off using WGA and then issue a blanket statement: “See, no more rootkit… fuckers!”

I care less and less what analysits and especially 3rd party vendors say. These are the same 3rd party “Security” vendors that required rootkits to get their virus scanners running on the old operating system. The same 3rd party vendors that make millions from sellnig rootkit-enabled DRM software that you can never uninstall. All I know is that I installed Vista Beta 2, the arguable “shitty release” and liked it… I liked it a whole lot. I see and read more articles about the releases after that and aparently Microsoft is throwing major weight, effort and concentration behind Vista. It’s getting really awesome!

Look at these stories. “Microsoft to charge for Office Beta” and “Vista delayed until ‘it’s ready’“. Umm, yea they are charging for Office disks, I can’t imagine how much it cost to give away Vista Beta 2, the amount of bandwidth alone was probably a small fortune. As far as Vista being delayed, jesus, delay Vista until next Christmas if it means that it keeps improving like it has been in the last 2 months. Keep it until all the security issues and complaints are resolved. What’s the worst case scenario? We get more compatible applications at launch as game and application vendors port their apps over over the next year. Ohh god forbid. This is what I’m talking about, Microsoft can’t even do anything normal or even positive without a negative spin on it. Heck take a look at the new Photosynth work, this looks like something from Apple or Google, very impressive.

I’m not a proponent of Microsoft, infact I’m running Ubuntu because I don’t even trust Windows anymore. So maybe the reputation is well deserved. It does seem that they are making changes recently, but who knows, maybe it’s all just P.R. Deep down I don’t think it is, I think they realize how much they have screwed up their reputation and that nothing but legit actions for the next 10 years will recover that.
