We got pumped about Call of Duty: World at War (Call of Duty 5) back in June when it was announced; then we got un-pumped a bit when we saw it was Treyarch doing it (the same folks that did Call of Duty 3), then we got re-pumped when we saw they had engineered in 4-player co-op from the ground up and had been working on the game for 2 years using the Call of Duty 4 engine (as opposed to Call of Duty 3 which they only had 8 months to work on).

It looks like we are starting to get close to the release because Treyarch just dropped a co-op gameplay video bomb all up on us, get a sneak peak with this one:

and if you want more, check out the Raid Co-Op Gameplay and the Subway Co-Op Gameplay (a little dark). There is also a movie covering an interesting new “competative” co-op play mode (which awesomely-enough translates literally to “cooperative competative” play) that seems to be structured around 1-upping the other players with points for kills.

Not a bad idea and a natural progression for more competative folks that don’t quite want the deathmatch experience, but can unnecessarily speed up a game if you have a kill-hog in the group that goes streaking through the level like Rambo. Then again, you can always choose to play through yourself or with a paced friend first before going through it speed-style.

We really like what we are seeing right now, sans some flat looking textures, if the co-op play is there and fun, I’ll be happy.
