Robert Heron sent along this super-slick link to PortableApps.com. For those of you in the know, it’s basically versions of your favorite open-source/free apps in a form that can be downloaded onto a USB drive (or other portable device like iPod) and immediately run from it.
For the folks not in the know, a quick introduction:
Not all applications need to be “installed” as you might be used to with Windows and running and installer. Some apps can simply be run right where they are without installing them. PortableApps provides versions of about 30 different applications covering all major computing areas that are like this.

The downloads are free and there seems to be a very active community around the project as well. I think it’s clear how handy it could be to throw all this on a USB drive and always have it handy for you (trouble shooting tool) or just for family members that like to work on different computers (home, library, work, etc.).
