Apple iPhone Does Not Support Java

Well this sucks, apparently Jobs doesn’t think much of Java:

Java’s not worth building in [to the phone]. Nobody uses Java anymore. It’s this big heavyweight ball and chain.

That’s unfortunate to hear, especially with Java becoming such a ubiquitous language for a lot of software, some really good on the Mac. If he doesn’t think much of Java, I don’t see Java on the Mac getting any better anytime soon.

Update #1: It appears that the iPhone won’t support any 3rd party applications and Apple is going to control the platform with it’s iron-grip. I can see with a device like this that ultimate control over all the apps (how they work, how they look) is important. So this isn’t the biggest surprise. Just curious what kind of difference this will make in the adoption of the phone… probably none?
