Apple Improved iPhone Battery

The new battery will give 8hrs of talk time and 250hrs of standby… that’s nice, but that was never the issue people had raised. If you remember the keynote where the iPhone was announced, the proximity detector in the handset turns the screen off when you put the phone up to your ear and turns it back on when you take it away. 8hrs of talk time is what I would at least expect from a cell phone. The question still stands, how long does this thing last when you use it like a portable PC as it’s intended? Shuffling through music? Browsing web? Checking email?

My guess? 2.5hrs… I’m not joking, I guess that it will last for 2.5hrs when using it how it’s intended.

Interesting, to me a proximity detector sounds like something would eat its own share of battery but maybe I’m just ignorant of proximity detectors.

I have never had a piece of electronic equipment that has a battery hold up to anywhere close what they “supposedly” support. Laptops, cameras, cellphones, iPods, all of them, they may work the advertised time once, but the first time you charge it, you have seen your last of the “advertised time” period. Then in 1-2 years, you are walking around looking for an outlet everywhere you go because your *berry, *Rzr, *Pod, needs its battery charged.

Exactly right. I remember the original numbers that (never?) got published by Apple for the MacBook Pro battery life… somewhere around 5 or so hours, but in reality it ended up being more like 2.5, 3 with the dimmest screen setting possible.

For browsing the web that’s handy… but 3hrs isn’t even enough time to go sit at Starbucks and work.

I imagine the iPhone and other demanding devices will perform exactly the same for the next 5 years until some revolution in battery technology occurs.
