Laurence Hartje sends in the raid-worthy news that Walmart will be kicking off the holiday season with a $99 HD-DVD player, specifically the Toshiba HD-A2 (CNET Review, Amazon Reviews).

Just a quick reminder, this is not the super-high-end 1080p HD-DVD player, this is the mainstream 1080i HD-DVD player. So if you are not an AV-phile, go for it. I don’t know if fighting the crowds will be worth it, but it’s worth a shot.

Also there are thoughts that this might just be the new price Walmart adopts for this device for the holiday season, so you might not need to run down there and get into a fist-fight with Larry the Tum-Tums for it:

Update #1: Laurence Hartje let’s us know that BestBuy has price-matched Walmart. CC soon to follow? Probably.
