Engadget reports that someone leaked to them Best Buy stocking docs that confirm the $399 PS3. The “in stock” date is October 28th, but there isn’t a confirmed “for sale” date yet.

This PS3 is the 40GB model that comes with Spiderman 3 on Blu-ray with it.

NOTE: For those that don’t know, these new PS3 units have the “software emulated” PS2 compatibility on them, just like the UK launch models did. The US launch models actually had the PS2 hardware inside the PS3 so the PS2 compatibility was perfect. Some folks are reported problems with some lesser known titles using the PS3’s PS2 software compatibility. Just something to be aware of if you have a huge PS2 collection.

This is something analyst Michael Pachter has been predicting for months now, so it looks like he was finally right. (NOTE: That’s more sarcastic than anything, I watch this guy a lot on The Bonus Round and he’s got a lot of good things to say)

This is probably good timing, not just for the holiday shopping season, but because the GameCube is apparently still kicking the PS3’s ass at sales…
