The full quote is they would give up their right to vote in the next election for a scholarship. I wonder if that stat is that surprising? Two reasons I can think of this not being that surprising is:
- A lot of people felt the last 2 elections were bullshit with all the shenanigans that ensued with lost ballot boxes, mismatching exit polls by a surprising margin and so on.
- Most of America is now founded on the concept of instant gratification. Fast food, Fast money, Cheap consumables, etc etc.
Both of the points above can leader to a voter’s general apathy. “What’s the point in voting?” or “Things are fine, I have a good job and a nice house, I don’t need to vote”.
I think people are so far disconnected from the voting process (1. You vote, 2. You realize results immediately for your vote) that it is becoming a enigmatic/mysterious process that less and less people feel strongly about; especially with the crushing debt-rate we have here for families in the U.S. Do you really have time to care if you should vote for Candidate A or B when you can barely make your house payment and work just started laying off people to maximize profits? Likely not…
I’m not sure what the right way to look at voting is… most military personnel I’ve met would shoot someone in the eyes that felt apathetic about voting, only because it seemed to shit on their very existence and purpose. Other folks I’ve met are so convinced the system stands for nothing and is so contrived/pre-planned in advance that it doesn’t matter who/what you vote for and simply ignore the process all together.
I think what I hate seeing the most is the general level of apathy towards voting. I don’t even care if people vote against my views, but getting involved is the key.
Apathy never leads to anything good.

Would you, like 1 out of 5 NYU students, give up your right to vote for an ipod? I’ve posted a poll with that question. Let’s see what are our national averages, not just those spoiled NY kids:

Jeff, thanks for the link.
For anyone that gives up their right to vote for an iPod… I just feel sorry for them…
