Good lord… to make a long story short, here is what happened:

  1. Someone cracked the master HD-DVD encryption key that is used to encode all HD-DVD movies.
  2. The key is something like a 16 digit number
  3. Someone posted it, got an take down notice from the AACS, but the only problem was in the take down notice, they accidentally included the actual number again.
  4. The story got posted to Digg WITH the number
  5. Digg started removing the stories with the number in it
  6. The community went crazy… here’s the result, front page of Digg:

Update #1: It also seems the guy that originally submitted the story not only got the story revoked, but he got his account banned. NICE digg. His posted was saved here though, so check it out.
