For those of you waiting to buy an HDTV and are current looking at bigger screens like the 60 or 70″ XBR2 from Sony, 71″ from Samsung, or the 65″ from Mitsubishi there are two things you are aware of with RPTV’s that likely concern you:

  • Rainbow Effect (RBE)
  • Silk Screen Effect (SSE)

With the addition of faster color wheels with more colors on them, the Rainbow Effect has been diminished greatly for a lot of people. There are still some folks seeing the Rainbow Effect, especially on sets with dynamic irises that may stay open too wide but that can be adjusted down.

There is however a large amount of folks still seeing the Silk Screen Effect on a lot of sets, even the newest ones. For a quick reference, the Silk Screen Effect can take the form of overly bright single pixels during a scene or a shimmering/bright effect. Some people don’t notice it, and some that do notice it aren’t bothered by it. I think I fall somewhere between these two categories, however in some scenes it can be distracting.

I had noticed on the Mitsubishi forum that a lot of folks were getting excited for the XX831 series to be released this month and kept making the reference that it would look “plasma-like finally”. I didn’t understand this reference to “plasma” specifically and asked for a clarification. ‘AlanBuck‘ was kind enough to fill me in on what is going on. It seems that the new high-gain screen coming on the Mitsubishi XX831 series of TV’s are using a refined technique to reduce or completely remove the problem of the Silk Screen Effect. Aparently the screen used on this set is suppose to give a very nice “looking through a window” effect like a plasma does.

So far there are 2 people on the thread that are headed out today to go view the Mitsubishi 65831 that are setup at local B&M stores, I will keep you posted on what they find (I called around locally and no one has them setup here yet).

[...] A few things, 1) the image looks unbelievably good even though these are just camera shots of the things and the color and overall brightness/saturation, especially in #1 and #2 look phenomenal to me. Also the bezel on the TV is unbelievably thin, I wasn’t prepared for that to be the case. Thankfully that horrible plastic bezel from the XX731 series has been replaced with a slightly polished black piano-ish bezel that I’m very happy about. The frame is still very minimal to get the TV “out of the way” as much as possible and provide a window-looking-ish view. The other aspect I’m most jazzed about seeing myself on this set is the new 180watt bulb coupled with the high-gain screen we talked about earlier. [...]
