Dead Rising: Huge potential, little payoff

Well it’s official. I just received word that probably one of the most anticipated games (by me) this year is going to be a bore… Dead Rising. This game had huge potential, check out some of the screenshot, this game literally had everything:

1) Good looking women (one probably in distress, the other a real go-getter!):

2) Vehicles, of sorts:

3) “Tools”:

4) Pink Eye:

5) Dismemberment:

How could you go wrong with this game? How… it has everything. Well I just got word from 2 folks “on the inside” that spent time with a demo and said that besides the horrendus load times that the actual purpose of the game (the missions) really really suck. I can see that happening but didn’t think it would be possible with so much fun adventuring.

In the trailer there is a section labelled “hang out with friends” that shows you running around the mall with a guy on your back. These types of missions have never been ones I’ve enjoyed. Basically burden the player so much to see if they can still fight their way through the same situations. Nocturne (one of the greatest games ever) did this when you had to “rescue” people from a zombie infested town. A lot of other games do this to and every time they do, all I can think of is “retarded”. Like these people are completely useless without you. The versions of this “rescue” mode I prefer and think is more real is when the people you rescue load-up and fight through the enemies with you. Not sure if DR is going to have this though.

The word from the “inside guys” is also that wandering around killing zombies is really fun, but like any game that has quirky little tasks like this it’s only fun for the first few hours and then when you sit down and actually try and play the game, the “game” part sucks.

In my uneducated opinion simplistic games like Dead Rising, from a game-play point of view, can totally be saved by a strong story line. Think of all the horror survival games you’ve ever played. The ones with the strongest stories are the best, the ones that make you WANT to save the girl or WANT to open the chest. Those are the best. The little mini puzzles of finding the “moon key” to open the door with a riddle on it is nice, but won’t carry the game. And flat our shooting zombies left and right isn’t fun forever, so the story has to come to the rescue at some point.

Oh well, I will keep my fingers crossed and wait for the demo on XBox Live.

You’re dead on. I’m returning this POS game. Annoying time based system. Stupid save system in the world. Weapons pretty much act the same, and there’s no combos. So it’s just whack whack whack. After a bit, it gets boring. And yes, the missions are run around and rescue idiots who just get ripped to shreds.

You nailed it, the issue here is that the core of the game is OK, but when they mix in the *retarded* save system to make the game last longer, and then strap ontop of that basically an endless set of rescue missions AND then throw a timer ontop of that, I just don’t see the fun in the game. I see how they *tried* to make it challenging, but not the fun in that.

Pretty biased review. You’ve yet to fully experience the game, and yet you’re so damn confident that it sucks.

Well, in my opinion, the game is absolutely fantastic. “Gamers” that can’t suck up a bit of their pride, and enjoy a game in its entirety for what it truly is are nothing more than whiney, close-minded fags.

Yeah, the AI’s a little flawed. But it’s also pretty extreme to go as far as “people are completely useless without you”… Right…

I beat 72-hour mode. Overtime mode. And have owned the shit out of Infinity mode. And I can still honestly say that this game’s difficulty is at the perfect level. What the fuck is a game without some frustration? You wanna just breeze your fuckin’ way through the level? You want to absorb what little excitement there is in a hack n’ slash game? Then go buy Castlevania, or Untold Legends, and shut the fuck up.

Anywho, waste of fuckin’ time reading this bull-shit rant. Goddamn tags always refer people to the gayest of web blogs… And considering that this article has had… three comments before me, proves that your page is no better. Good luck endulging yourself in the world of “gaming”. Maybe someday, you’ll show signs of developing a brain, and dare I say… enlighten yourself.

    Andrew,
This post wasn’t a review, it was leaked information before the game was ever released… that’s why the word “review” was never used in the post.

The *actual* review of the game is here:

and I actually agree with you, I enjoyed the game a lot. I don’t know that your crazy-internet-rant-style was necessary, but either way I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Andrew, actually I had a question for you… I imagine at this point your guys is leveled up pretty high, can you blast through most portions of the game now just bare-handed or is it still hard and you have to dodge mobs of zombies?

I noticed as I leveled my character I was having more and more fun just mangling them but didn’t level high enough to really be “invincible”. Especially down in the parking garage area…
