20 Medieval Torture Devices

Humor & Fun

thecontaminated.com did a hell of a writeup covering 20 of the most gruesome torture devices from mankind’s history (I’m sure there are others not covered in this post that I would really rather not know about).

Looking at some of these torture devices makes me wince… makes me wonder… how did one human being do this to another so willingly? Are we really so malleable and fundamental understandings of right/wrong good/bad so non-intrinsic that someone could do something like this without a second thought, and worst, end up liking it as a “days work”?

For example, two I found particularly brutal:

Torture Devices The Boots Torture Devices Water Torture

On the left you have “The Boots” which is described as a pair of essentially wooden frames that go around your legs, up to the knee, where each frame is comprised of segments that can shift Right or Left independently of the other segments. Allowing the torturer to stand to the side, and hit the segments with a sledge hammer, moving it right or left effectively shattering the shin bones in your legs. The idea was that the torture would stop when your legs were simply skin-bags holding your bone fragments from your shins. (I’m going to vomit)

The second picture is Water Torture, apparently a favorite of Japanese guards in WWII. The idea is that a tube is snaked up your nose, down into your stomach where water is pumped in so fiercely that your stomach becomes distended. At that point the guards begin to stomp on and kick you in the stomach, until your stomach lining rips and you eventually bleed to death internally.

There are some really fucked up things in here… like “The Cat’s Paw” is just a metal rake used to pull the skin off of someone’s body while they are strung up… there is also a noticeably sexual spin on most of these torture devices, especially the ones for women.

Then these are #2 and #3 on the list, which I found worse than #1…

Torture Devices Impalement Torture Devices The Saw

In the first one you have… well impalement. Reminiscent of the scene from Cannibal Holocaust, the idea is that the person is impaled, through the anus/vagina up through/out their mouth… the part I found vomit-inducing is that some people don’t die for that “writhing around for up to a day before dying”.

Then lastly we have “The Saw”… not too much left to the imagination with the picture. People are simply hung upside down, then cut in half. The sickest fucking part about this is that they are hung upside down in order to keep the blood around the brain, so they live longer during the experience.

Seriously?

Back in the middle ages they knew enough about human anatomy, god knows from shit like this, to know that would keep someone alive longer so they could torture them more?

And keep in mind almost none of these techniques are interrogation techniques, their purpose isn’t to extract information… it’s just to fucking mangle someone with a hammer, saw or piece of metal in order to kill them.

Sorry for the decidedly dark post… I really feel sick now.

I know… I had to file it under my catch-all category, so I didn’t have to create a “torture and sadism” category… but atleast I got the tags right ;)

  3. Always Travelling Says:

Decidedly gross. Haven’t felt this ill since I did a tour round London’s clink jail and saw all the “instruments” in person….

  4. Riyad Kalla Says:

Oh wow… do you have any shots of this stuff? I imagine I would feel quiet sick myself…

  5. Sarah Says:

If you think this stuff is gross, I’m doing a project on torture. The ‘Pear of Anguish’ was inserted into a persons anus, (b/c homosexuality) vagina,(b/c abortion or adultry) or mouth (b/c blaspmey). Attached to this pear shaped object was four flaps which came apart on each side to slowly rip apart the skin and mutilate the insides. If you didn’t die from that alone you would die from infection because they never cleaned it

  6. Riyad Kalla Says:

un-fucking-believable the stuff people think of to maul each other…

This is one of those topics that I’m morbidly curious about, but cringe at the more I learn.

Sarah is your project something that can be shared? I’m sure folks would find it morbidly interesting as well.

… Freeman I’m really hoping you were a spam-bot, because if you think that looks fun, I really hope we never meet in real life :(

  15. claire Says:

well done could use more pics

  16. Riyad Kalla Says:

    claire,
I know what you mean… this stuff is so damn morbid but still interesting. The old-style sketch drawings from old-books really sells the whole “nasty, medieval, undereducated, torture” vibe doesn’t it?

  17. Crystal Says:

I am doing a project on torture as well. It pains me to read some of these horrible descriptions, but it’s very interesting…..It’s very scary to see what some people would do if they could get away with it….I’m sure some people deserved it,but how could they be absolutely sure back then…….You’d have to be pretty damn bad to go through any of that. I am going to have a good presentation I do believe.

  18. Zhudas Says:

very very intresting…. although im not quiet sure why you people find it disgusting, after all we are all human, dont we sumtimes like to cause pain to people we hate. after all this are the best and formost the satisfactory form of punishing them. btw i my self doing a project just like you other scum bags but i need a volunteer. any one up for it. i pay them/loveone a great deal of money. thank you

  19. monroe Says:

Its natural to be intrigued by these things. I for one, research these things, even when I don’t have to. Its not “sick” or “twisted” to be curious. Its an intriguing topic. The things people do to other people. Sometimes its so bizarre, so disgusting. You’re just drawn to it.
Back in the day, the press used to print vivid, detailed articles on deaths, murders, suicide, and even Emily Dickinson was noted to saying that she particularly liked to read about train accidents and factory accidents.
Its in our nature to be drawn to “the dark side”. It just is. Its because its so foreign and different to us. We’ve never experienced these things. The fact that these things actually happened, from one human being to another, draws us in. Even today, its interesting to read about the modern day atrocities. Serial killers, for instance. Do we ever remember the victims? Hardly. We remember the killer, because the things he does are so different. They’re so malicious and disgusting. Bad news is always more fun to hear than good.

I guess I’m just sticking up for the ones that were on the more “excited” side of this article. Its not wrong to think these things are interesting and cool to learn about it. I’m sure we can all agree that these methods and mechanisms are disgusting and unimaginable, but they’re very interesting to learn about.

    monroe,
A very valid point. For anyone that doubts what monroe said, consider (to a lesser degress) how popular *and* unnecessarily dramatic “reality TV” is today, people don’t just argue, they back-stab and try and destroy each other.

I think you are right, it’s the extremeness (if that’s even a word) of it that appeals to us and makes us go “omg what the hell?!” and want to keep reading more.

I know in the back of my head when I re-read this topic all I can think is “if I lived back then, I think I’d just hide in a barrel some where so no one could do this stuff to me”

  21. LaRN Says:

    Wow…. Very interesting… and gross.

  22. Irreverant Says:

I read a book once called ‘Demonic Males’, that tried to explain the origins of violence in the human race. Apparently, “alpha male” or not, many of the males would regularly and often brutally beat there off-spring and particually their female partner(s), usually with branches, to what avail? Power and dominence!

I guess, through the beautiful process of evolution, violence has now found an even more effective “channel” to express itself through – Mankind!

Some philosophers suggest that “thought” is what separates us from “animals”. After reading this post, I conclude that “thought” is a very dangerous thing.

And “Mother Nature” is one sadistic b**** !!!!!!!!!!

  23. adnama Says:

ok i am doing a project also on midevil torcher and i can’t stand it for another second i have found so many horrible instruments of torcher i cried at the thought of someone going through that….. i am one who live by the saying “spread the love not the hate” or ” forgive and forget” and a thousand others like that ……. no one and i mean absolutly NO ONE should have to go through that no matter what they did…. there was one called the brazen bull and it was terrible they would make a bull out of bronze and tell people to get into it and scream so they could see if it actually sounded like a bull….. but then once they are in the bull the mean people lock the top ( there were no other air ways) and set a fire beneath the bull so it got up to like a thousand degrees in it… and when they screamed for help people thought that they were testing the bull…….If only i knew…..

  24. adnama Says:

my bad i didnt actually mean if only i knew how to use it i meant if only i knew why they did it

  25. miss somebody Says:

omg this is weird stuff. im doing a project aswell and this creeps me out. just looking at what some people went through makes me sick and now i have to do a speech on it and include pics aswell.

  26. Riyad Kalla Says:

How do so many of you have projects based on this? I never learned about this stuff in school — I think I would have passed out.

What country are you guys in? US? UK? etc?

  27. SexMachine Says:

i think that the best torture device will be fucking someone to death or handjobs

  28. j Says:

This is so sick i swear im gonna puke what kinda fruit cake doese that

  29. p Says:

that is the colest thing in the world

  30. p Says:

wean they do the stuff you cant move

  31. camron Says:

wow. i am really glad that we were not alive then! talk about mind blowing pain!!!

  32. Lily Says:

Haha. I am also doing a project on medieval torture . yes, that’s “medieval torture” not “midevil torcher” adnama . Have you people heard of rat torture. They would put a rat under a ceramic bowl of some sort and then put a rat under it and heat it so that the only way the rat can get out is through your flesh; or sometimes they would insert a rat in your anus and the rat would have to find its way out through your bowels . eugh. it is trully disgusting .

  33. Lisa Says:

It’s very interesting, I’ve been researching it for awhile now. I think exposure is probably the worst, because it takes the longest to die and since it was so cheap, people used it often. Sometimes the person was buried up to their neck and left for the animals and sun, other times they were hung in a cage with large holes to allow the birds to rip away the flesh, and still other ways were to chain them in the stocks or pillories. Often the victim was killed by other people throwing things at them while they were defenseless. The human mind is so twisted. Eewww.
